The secondhand clothing market worldwide is predicted. And rise to a value of $50 to 60 billion in the next few years. With a large chunk of that market in the African continent. Compare that to fast fashion’s $40 billion, and you can predict a rise in distributors. East Africa, for example, imports more than $150 million worth of secondhand clothes. USAID, in 2017, has estimated that the resale market in Africa has generated a government revenue of $230 million. And employment of more than 350,000 people.

Secondhand clothing is called differently across Zagumi’s partner countries. In Nigeria, people would say “Okrika” or “akube,” which means “bend down select.” .The Swahili word “mitumba,” which means “second hand,” is used in Kenya. In Zambia, it’s “salaula.” Ugandans say “mivumba.” Regardless of what they call it, Africans love quality goods and fashionable clothes from secondhand clothing stores. And the reason for the growth of this industry is as follows:

Better quality

Clothes and shoes come from high-income countries like China. Even if they are used items, are seen to have far better quality than locally produced items, even brand new ones.  Businesses that retail secondhand clothes claim that their customers prefer clothes that were made for the Chinese. Or Western markets because they are of better quality than those for the African market. Customers were willing to pay for used merchandise with a higher price than new items of lower price.

Variety of prices

Zagumi: The Grade-A Secondhand Clothes Supplier. Secondhand clothes are priced according to their quality. Zagumi guarantees high-quality products that are still in excellent condition. But the African vendors can sort the goods according to trendy and appealing. When sorted, they can be sold at various prices that are affordable to customers with lower purchasing power to those who can afford to splurge in items that cost more than new items.

Trendy goods

The products in Zagumi provides are not those from bygone decades. The used clothes, bags, and shoes have a current appeal that caters to the needs of sophisticated professionals to the younger, more global generations exposed to global pop culture. The latest fashion is always the trend, and Zagumi can deliver.

African government support

Government regulations of African countries encourage the importation of secondhand clothes and goods. The market benefits governments as they get revenue from customs duties, taxes, and employment opportunities for their people.
